A diversified economy
The province of Lugo is the largest of the four Galician provinces with an area of 9,856 km² and has the lowest population density (328,153 inhabitants).
The economy is based on services (with 70% of workers), followed by industry (mainly agri-food), the primary sector (agriculture, livestock, forestry, and fishing) and lastly construction.
In the primary sector, fishing is developed on the north coast of the province (As Mariñas), agricultural exploitation (commercial, self-consumption or for livestock), which is committed to crops such as potatoes, vegetables, fodder, cereals, and vines. And in livestock, bovine (meat or milk) stands out, followed by sheep and pigs.
It is the national leader in dairy production (generates 1,000,000 tons of milk) and wood (annual number of cuts between 1,000,000 and 3,000,000 m³). In the Galician community, more than 50% of the country's woodcuts are concentrated.
In the secondary sector, the potential of the agri-food industry stands out. In addition, extractive activities (aggregates and stones) are carried out.
Its distribution by sector is articulated according to the geography of the area. In the north, industry and construction stand out. While in the centre the service sector predominates, followed by the primary sector. On the other hand, mountain areas are specialized in the primary sector (especially forestry and livestock), with an important activity derived from the exploitation of forests.
Galicia is an exporting region and Lugo follows this trend, which allows it to market its products around the world.
An ecological agricultural sector
It is the Galician province that allocates the most land to organic farming (almost 50% of the total for the community), in which around 44% of the total producers and 24% of the total marketers operate. It is the one that generates the most sales per year (36% of the total). Its cultivated area increases year by year. The items most in demand are milk, meat, and canned fish.
Lugo has the largest number of cattle farms in its community, more than 8,000 are dedicated to the production of meat and more than 3,000 to milk. It is the largest producer of milk in Galicia. It is followed to a lesser extent by sheep, goat and pig farms.
This is reflected in its gastronomy, which stands out especially for its seafood and dishes such as “pulpo a feira” or pork shoulder with turnip tops.
A heterogeneous agri-food industry
The secondary sector in Lugo is based on the agri-food, paper, chemical and manufacturing industries.
The most important is the agri-food industry. In the province, there is a thick diversified industrial fabric in which manufacturing is carried out from native products. It is made up of a network of micro-enterprises linked to family farms or livestock farms.
In the first place are the bakeries and pastry shops, many of which produce their wheat; followed by the producers of wines and spirits of the D. O. Ribeira Sacra; meat industries (sausages); dairy products, included in the D. O. Arzúa-Ulloa; fruit and vegetables (mushrooms, potatoes, chestnuts, and canned vegetables); the producers of animal feed (feed) and those that sell honey, eggs, and oil.
The areas with the largest number of companies are part of the industrial estates located in the counties that hold a Denomination of Origin or in the capital (with the largest number of workers and billing), which has all the infrastructures, services, and access to the main communication routes.
The Provincial Council offers industrial land (195,000 m²) for the installation of transformer plants in the primary sector, as well as for other types of companies, in different estates throughout the province with rebates of up to 50%.
In summary, the province of Lugo has a high agricultural and industrial character, although the services sector predominates in it. The quality of its products has led to the creation of various representative Denominations of Origin. In recent years the value of its land has been increasing, especially urban and rural land, while there is a wide range of industrial land at very tempting prices and with excellent investment conditions.
